Yes to Good News March 16, 2020

Hi and welcome to this episode of Yes to Good News March 16, 2020!

First Good News Story March 16, 2020

The first story we are sharing with you today comes to us from sunnyskyz.com. A 93 year old lady, Bonnie Linder from Hatley, Iowa goes outside every morning waiting for the school bus to go by so she can wave to all of the children.

Knowing her 93rd birthday was taking place on the weekend, the bus driver and the children planned a surprise for Linder on Friday. They stopped briefly to all wish her a happy birthday.

Linder’s daughter, Judy Zimmerman, captured the moment on video. She wrote the following on Facebook,

“My mother will be 93 on Sunday and it warms my heart to see this simple, yet POWERFUL Act of Kindness!

As I visit from Texas, know that there is and always will be a sense of LOVE for the small communities in Iowa where GOOD still exists and JOY is found!”

In addition to our inspirational clip of the day below, be sure to also watch the birthday greeting found here. Seeing the video clip of this birthday greeting definitely put a smile on our faces. We’re sure it will do the same for you. 🙂

Second Good News Story

Our next yes to good news story was featured on msn.com where we learned of Becky Wass, a resident from the county of Cornwall in the United Kingdom. Feeling helpless yet wanting to help out older neighbors or others who may need support during this period of self-isolation, Wass made a postcard that she’ll be sending to her older neighbors… after washing her hands, of course!

The postcard has a place where people can put their name, address, and phone number. They then check off what they would like help with… picking up shopping, a friendly phone call, posting mail, or urgent supplies. Residents then call or text Wass and she then helps them for free!

“If just one person feels less lonely or isolated when faced with this pandemic, then I’ll feel better about it (I hope!)… Let’s make kindness go viral.”

Third Good News Story

This next Yes to Good News story was found on goodnewsnetwork.org. 34 year old Day-Today convenience store owner in Drylaw, Edinburgh, Zahid Iqbal, has given away more than 1,000 kits to seniors staying home right now. The kits contain toilet paper, antibacterial handwash, tissues, and anti-inflammatories to seniors.

Each kit costs Iqbal around £5 to make and has cost him at least £5,000 so far. This total isn’t including the fuel costs to deliver the goods. He is thinking of extending this service to include food bags containing pasta and tinned goods.

Iqbal, who believes his customers are worth every penny, says,

“We have lots of customers from the local care homes, as well as disabled customers, who can’t get hand sanitizers, loo rolls or anything at all. We just want to set a good example in this world.”

“The appreciation we’ve been getting has been out of this world,” he added. “You couldn’t get this kind of satisfaction if you spent thousands of pounds, it’s amazing.”

Iqbal’s family-owned convenience store currently employs 5 people and has served the local community for more than 15 years.

Yet Another Yes to Good News Story

Our next story was featured on globalgoodness.ca where we learned of the renewable energies the country of Sweden is using for public transport. Stockholm, Sweden no longer uses diesel or other fuel, but rather uses wastewater to run their buses. The city has partnered with French-Canadian operator, Keolis, to recover wastewater from the city and send it to a biomethane production plant. In doing so, they are sending 80,000 tons less Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere and avoiding 90% of the pollution typically related to public transit.
