Yes to Good News March 21, 2020

Hi! Welcome to this Yes to Good News March 21 episode!

Well, I’ll be honest in saying that it’s difficult to find news stories that don’t have the word coronavirus or COVID-19 in them. I remember reading once about a man recalling his mother to tell him to look for the good in people when bad things happen, to look for the people helping and to focus on that instead of focusing on the negative.

Well, if this virus is accomplishing anything positive, it’s just that. There are numerous stories of people helping and doing what they can to help others out.

Yes to Good News March 21 Story 1

Like the story featured in sunnyskyz.com of two friends living in Massachusetts. Jill Ashworth Valadao and Sarah Otis Firth who launched a fundraiser called “FaceTime for Nana”. The two raised thousands of dollars through their Facebook campaign, “FaceTime for Nana” with the goal of purchasing iPads for residents in nursing homes who are no longer being allowed visitors.

The activity director from Alden Court, one of the nursing homes that received an iPad, sent the following message to Firth:

“During such a difficult time, these sweet gestures literally make the residents’ days. Yesterday more than 75 FaceTime calls were made to families at Alden. This process has kept our families connected and reassured that their loved one is safe and content. The residents get a kick out of the technology and share a few laughs/smiles when they see their loved one on the ipad.

Our goal is to find positive things to keep the resident spirits up and this is one of the many good things happening. Today, the residents and the staff will be receiving performances from local young performers donating their time and their talents to present mini concerts for the residents VIA FACETIME. The Ipad gift was a blessing today. So thank you Sarah for thinking of Alden Court.”

Second Yes to Good News Story

Unfortunately, the iPad idea is a little too late for our next good news story. However, it’s a good one nonetheless. This next story was featured on Today.com where we learned of Bob Shellard, whose wife of 67 years is in a nursing home in which visitors are not currently allowed. This didn’t stop Shellard from finding a way to profess his love for his wife on their anniversary. Standing outside his wife’s window, Shellard held balloons and a big sign with a red heart that he spent a week making that read, “I’ve loved you 67 years and still do. Happy Anniversary!”

The couple’s daughter indicated that her dad visited her mom every single day up until the coronavirus outbreak and the extra precautions that were then put into place.

Yes to Good News March 21 Story 3

Our third good news story was featured in sunnyskyz.com. The world’s largest cruise line, Carnival Corp. is offering their cruise ships as temporary hospitals in locations needing them to help combat the coronavirus.

Ships are able to provide up to 1,000 hospital rooms. Each of the rooms have their own bathroom facilities, private balconies, and isolation capabilities. Rooms can also easily be converted to accommodate intensive care needs including monitoring equipment and assistive devices.

While local medical personnel would oversee the treatment of patients, the crew from Carnival would provide cleaning services as well as food and beverage.

President Trump has indicated he will present Carnival’s offer to New York and California at this time.

4th Yes to Good News Story

Our next good news story was featured on goodnewsnetwork.org. For any of you that have had an MRI, you understand that the machine is far from quiet. In fact, it can feel quite scary and isolating.

After witnessing the trauma of young patients requiring MRIs, industrial designer Doug Dietz became inspired to create the MR Adventure Discovery Series. In partnership with GE Healthcare and the University of Pittsburg Hospital, Dietz redesigned the MRI rooms to feature “adventure” environments.

Young patients become transported to an adventurous world. Simple commands get the scan done accurately as part of their adventure.

Upcoming Virtual Garth Brooks Concert

Fox News reports that Garth Brooks is planning a Facebook concert for Monday, March 23rd at 7pm Eastern time. He will be accompanied by his wife, Tricia Yearwood. They are taking song requests on his Facebook page, which you can easily find by searching for Garth Brooks official page on Facebook. His page will have a blue checkmark beside it indicating it is verified to be him. Plus it has over 2 million people that like it, so it’s easy to find.
